The underground city Project

Tunnels have existed since ancient times, in different forms and for different purposes, from mining, transport, water transportation, shelter and terrorism.

When I made a cardboard tunnel, I was interested in the reasons why people make tunnels and for what reasons, and I researched about historical tunnels and their various functions.  I discovered that constructing tunnels combines different technologies from industry and civil engineering and architecture.

I am not a pessimist, but I have been thinking about the gradual and inevitable destruction of the earth, which is happening every day.

Mankind has created lots of things which change and improve the quality of life. The desire to create new technologies led to the Industrial Revolution, developing mechanized and fuel driven machines, which was a major turning point in human development and a major contribution to improving the quality of life for the masses. However a major consequence has been that natural resources are exploited to the point of threatening human existence, possibly beyond recovery.

Urgent serious problems such as human health problems, resource depletion and ecological damage must be addressed. From the human health aspect, health hazard factors increased due to photochemical smog and air pollutants, health damaging substances, latent toxic substances and carcinogens.

The exploitation and depletion of resources has led to ecological damage, sometimes referred to as ‘ecocide’, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain and habitat alteration. For these global issues, many countries and global company emphasis “sustainability” but sustainability is not a solution, but merely delaying the inevitable. Nowadays many countries are investing in exploring the possibility of sustaining life on other planets, as well as travelling beyond our known solar system.

Science cannot accurately predict the timing of this becoming a reality, so research must continue into other solutions to surviving and flourishing on planet earth. Through my research into tunnels, I began to consider the possibility of creating an underground society, which is entirely possible using current technology.
